GERMANY: German tire manufacturer Continental has won two awards at the prestigious Tire Technology International (TTI) Awards for Innovation and Excellence, held recently in Hanover, Germany.

Continental was honoured with the “Environmental Achievement of the Year – Manufacturing” award for its innovative ‘invisible markers in tires’ project.

The ‘invisible markers in tires’ project aim to bring greater transparency and traceability to the natural rubber supply chain by using special marker technology developed in collaboration with Security Matters (SMX).

This initiative impressed the judges, who recognized Continental’s commitment to improving sustainability and environmental awareness in its tires.

The invisible markers contain information about the natural rubber’s origin, which the users can read using special devices and software.

The PremiumContact 7 tire is Continental’s seventh generation of its successful premium tire. The company claims that it resolves the trade-off between mileage and rolling resistance to provide a sustainable tire offering unparalleled driving safety.

The tire’s size-special design, innovative compound for the tread nicknamed RedChili, and adaptive tread design have set new standards in safety and comfort for a wide range of vehicles, including EVs.

Dr. Boris Mergell, Head of Research & Development at Continental Tires, accepted the awards and stated that the company’s commitment to performance, sustainability, and safety runs right across its organization.

He added that winning awards for both innovative technologies and products is a tremendous motivation for the entire team.

The TTI Awards for Innovation and Excellence are considered the most important awards in the global tire industry and its recognises the latest developments and advances in tire technology.

An international jury of leading experts from the tire industry and more than 20 journalists judge the awards.

Matt Ross, editor-in-chief at Tire Technology International, commented on Continental’s success, saying that the company’s development of invisible markers to increase the traceability of natural rubber impressed the judges.

He elaborated that the technology showcases Continental’s commitment to improving the sustainability of its tires but also being part of a global supply chain that holds itself accountable to environmental awareness.

According to him, the award was a tough one to call. However, Continental’s seventh generation of the PremiumContact tire, built upon the strengths of its predecessors, impressed the jurors.

The high levels of technological innovation on display and the focus on passenger comfort and safety caught the attention of the jury panel.
