INDIA: The rating of cricket pitches has been a topic of discussion for a long time, with different opinions from players, coaches, and officials.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) rates pitches at the end of every match using the Pitch Monitoring Process, which evaluates the pitch’s performance and gives it a rating.

Recently, the pitch used for the 3rd Test between India and Australia in Indore was rated ‘poor’ by the match referee Chris Broad.  This rating sparked controversy, and the BCCI appealed against it.

After reviewing the footage, an ICC appeal panel consisting of Wasim Khan and Roger Harper concluded that the pitch did not have enough excessive variable bounce to warrant the ‘poor’ rating and changed it to ‘below average’.   As a result, the Holkar Stadium will receive only one demerit point instead of the original three.

Pitch rating is essential to maintain balance in the game. If a pitch is too favourable to bowlers or batters, it can make the game one-sided and less exciting.

Ideally, a pitch should provide a balance between bat and ball, and both bowlers and batters should have an equal chance of succeeding.

The Pitch Monitoring Process evaluates pitches based on several factors, including bounce, turn, and swing, among others. If a pitch fails to meet the criteria, it can receive a poor rating.

For Indian cricket, the debate about the Indore pitch rating is nothing new. Indian pitches have often been overlooked because of how spin-friendly they are.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy’s opening two matches were played on wickets that benefited spinners as well, but they only obtained a “average” rating from the ICC.

Pitch rating is crucial for the development of cricket. A pitch that favours spinners or pacers can help nurture young talent, but it can also lead to a skewed perception of the game.

In recent years, several teams have been accused of preparing pitches that suit their strengths, leading to one-sided contests. The ICC has been working to address this issue and promote a fair and balanced game.

In conclusion, the pitch rating is an essential aspect of cricket that needs careful consideration. The ICC’s Pitch Monitoring Process plays a crucial role in maintaining balance in the game and preventing one-sided contests.

The recent controversy over the Indore pitch rating highlights the importance of a fair and balanced playing field, and it is up to the ICC and the cricketing community to ensure that this is maintained.
