UNITED STATES: Some portions of Twitter Inc.’s source code have been leaked, a legal filing shows, and the social media platform, which is owned by Elon Musk, is looking for information on the perpetrator.
According to the filing, a user going by the name of “FreeSpeechEnthusiast” shared “various excerpts” of Twitter’s source code, which runs the company’s online operations, on Github, a platform owned by Microsoft for sharing software development code.
Microsoft-owned platform GitHub said that it removed the code on Friday at Twitter’s behest.
In the filing from March 24, Twitter asked the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California to direct Github to provide “all identifying information” connected with the account name “FreeSpeechEnthusiast.”
GitHub didn’t immediately reply to a request for an inquiry on whether it has provided such information. Also, it did not respond to how long the source code of Twitter had been publicly available.
A request for comment from the social media platform also did not receive an immediate response.
The leak of source code creates more challenges for Elon Musk, the billionaire who purchased the social media platform last October for $44 billion and has since experienced significant layoffs.
As per the filing, the Elon Musk-owned social network is requesting Github for the names, IP addresses, contact information, phone numbers, and social media accounts of those parties.
The business has also started an internal investigation into the leak, according to a New York Times article citing unnamed people with knowledge of the situation.
