UNITED STATES: The first lady of the United States, Jill Biden, said that there’s “pretty much” nothing left to do but determine the time and location for the statement on Friday, giving one of the clearest hints yet that Joe Biden will seek reelection.
Although Biden has long indicated that he intends to run for office again, he hasn’t made it public and has found it difficult to allay concerns that he is too old to continue as president. Biden is 80 years old right now, and at the conclusion of a second term, he would be 86.
On the second and last stop of her five-day journey to Africa, which began earlier this week in Namibia, Jill Biden said, “He says he’s not done,” in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. “He’s not finished what he’s started,” she added.
“And that’s what’s important,” she said in an exclusive conversation with the Associated Press in between the events in Kenya. “How many times does he have to say it for you to believe it?” she added.
Biden aides have stated that an announcement is anticipated to be made in April, following the conclusion of the first fundraising quarter, which is roughly the same time that Barack Obama formally launches his 2012 reelection campaign.
The first lady has long been cited as an important person in Biden’s life as he makes preparations for the future. “Because I’m his wife,” she chuckled. But when asked if she had the final say on whether the president would seek reelection, she shrugged it off.
Donald Trump, who will turn 77 in June, announced last November that he would run for president once more in the 2024 election despite being soundly defeated by Joe Biden in the 2020 election and inspiring an uprising at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, by his own supporters hoping to reverse Biden’s victory.
Trump is also being investigated in a series of civil actions and criminal cases. These involve a variety of matters, such as fraud at his real estate firm, meddling in the 2016 presidential election, federal inquiries by a special counsel into his participation in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, and the storage of sensitive government documents at his Florida home after he ran for office.
In addition, a civil trial in New York featuring allegations of rape and defamation is about to start. Jill Biden’s comments on Friday follow a poll published earlier this week that revealed positive results for the president’s standing among Democrats.
As per the NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll, an equal number of Democrats and independents leaning Democratic believe the party has a better chance with Biden as the candidate, while 45% believe they would be better off supporting someone else.
That is an improvement for Biden compared to November of last year, when the numbers were roughly reversed: at that time, 54% preferred someone else and only 38% supported the president.
On the other hand, that poll revealed discouraging news for Trump as he pursues the GOP’s nomination for president. 42% of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents think the former president is still the best candidate for the job, while 54% of Republicans believe the party would be better off with someone other than Trump as the nominee.
