CANADA: On Saturday, Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, revealed that an “unidentified object” had been shot down that had been flying over Canada.
Trudeau tweeted, ” I ordered the takedown of an unidentified object that violated Canadian airspace. North American Aerospace Defense Command shot down the object over the Yukon. Canadian and US aircraft were scrambled, and a US F-22 successfully fired the object.”
This occurred one day after the US military shot down the “high altitude object” over Alaska. One week later, the military shot down a Chinese spy balloon off the South Carolina coast.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) stated that “a high-altitude airborne object” was being monitored over northern Canada, and military aircraft were operating in the area between Alaska and Canada. It is not transparent whether the object is related to the suspected Chinese spy balloon that was shot down last week or any other object that was shot down over Alaska on Friday.
Trudeau talked with US President Joe Biden following the sightings, and they agreed to “recover and analyze the wreckage of the object.”
Trudeau tweeted, “I spoke with President Biden this afternoon. The Canadian Forces will now recover and analyze the wreckage of the object. Thank you, NORAD, for keeping the watch over North America.”
The US Intelligence Community has associated the Chinese spy balloon with a huge surveillance program operated by the People’s Liberation Army. According to US officials, the surveillance balloon has been operating for many years out of the Hainan province off China’s south coast, gathering information on military assets in countries and areas of interest such as Japan, India, Vietnam, Taiwan, and the Philippines.
One official says, ” What the Chinese have done is taken an unbelievably old technology and basically married it with modern communications and observation capabilities to try to glean intelligence on other nations’ militaries. It’s a massive effort.”
