14 Hindu Temples in Northeastern Bangladesh Damaged by Miscreants, Police Launch Probe

A group of unidentified miscreants attacked 14 Hindu temples and vandalised the idols

BANGLADESH: In a recent incident, an anonymous gang of individuals vandalised nine Hindu goddess idols in 14 temples in the Baliadangi upazila in northwest Bangladesh. The arbitrary assault took place between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

According to a Hindu community leader, Bidyanath Barman, “Unidentified people carried out the attacks under the cover of darkness, vandalising idols in 14 temples in three unions (lowest local government tier).”

Barman serves as the general secretary of the council, organising the subdistrict puja celebration. He recalled the entire occurrence and claimed that while some of the idols were destroyed, others were discovered floating in pond water close to the temple locations.

The majority of Muslims don’t have any issues with Hindus and don’t hold any animosity toward them, according to Hindu community leader and union parishad chairman Samar Chatterjee.

As per reports, nine idols in the Sindurpindi area of the Dhantala union, four in the Collegepara area of the Paria union, and fourteen Hindu deity idols from a temple in the Sahbajpur Nathpara area of the Charol union of Bangladesh got vandalised by the miscreants. 

However, Thakurgaon’s police chief, Jahangir Hossain, said, “It clearly appears to be a case of an orchestrated attack to disrupt the peaceful situation of the country.”

Further, the police officer launched an investigation to track the attackers and assured everyone of proving them guilty. He stated, “I assure you they will have to face stern legal actions.” 

Deputy Commissioner Mahbubur Rahman has also visited the incident site personally and is investigating the matter seriously. 

The chairman of Baliadangi upazila parishad, Md. Ali Aslam Jewel, narrating the incident, said, “The idols of the temples that were vandalised were thrown unsafely on the side of the road.”
