UNITED STATES: Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Meta, has started to drop hints about the next-generation consumer headset, saying that it will be released “later this year” and will feature better mixed reality (MR) technology.

In the company’s latest earnings release, Zuckerberg said, “The Meta Reality ecosystem is quite new, but I believe it will grow significantly in the next years.”

“We’re going to introduce our next-generation consumer headset later this year, which will also include Meta Reality, and I anticipate that this will establish this technology as the standard for all headsets moving forward, as well as, of course, for augmented reality (AR) glasses at some point,” Zuckerberg said.

He added that the company’s virtual reality (VR) devices currently have more than 200 applications that have generated more than $1 million in revenue.

Last month, Meta enhanced their Quest hand tracking technology with the new Hand Tracking 2.1 update, which includes improvements in reliability, accuracy, and system pinch quality to increase the flexibility and consistency of hand inputs in users’ VR apps.

Meanwhile, the business updated Meta Quest with a new heart rate monitoring feature and Health Connect via an Android connection so that customers could keep track of all their fitness data.

Meta reported lower fourth-quarter profit and revenue, with quarterly profit decreasing by 55%, as Zuckerberg stated on Thursday that his management theme for 2023 is “efficiency” after 18 years of growth while addressing investors on a post-earnings call.

The business’s net income for the last three months of 2022 was $4.65 billion, or $1.76 per share. That represents a 55% decrease from $10.29 billion, or $3.67 per share, a year ago.

The software juggernaut, which fired 11,000 employees in November—roughly 13% of its workforce—marks its third straight quarter of declining revenue. According to Meta, its fourth-quarter revenue totaled $32.17 billion, down from $33.67 billion in the prior year.

“I’m happy with the great engagement across our apps and the continued growth of our community. Facebook has passed the landmark of 2 billion daily active users,” said Zuckerberg in a statement.
