UNITED STATES: On Tuesday, against the backdrop of the Ukrainian conflict and other crises, “Doomsday Clock,” which represents the assessment of top science and security experts regarding the threats to human survival, will be updated.

Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists will broadcast an announcement at 10:00 am (1500 GMT) regarding Doomsday Clock’s time adjustment.
The group believes the timepiece serves as a “symbol for how near mankind is to self-annihilation” and that the annual reset should be interpreted as a “call-to-action to reverse the hands.”
The Bulletin’s scientific and security board and its board of sponsors, which is comprised of 11 Nobel laureates, decide each year whether to move the hands of the clock.
The Bulletin stated that they will consider the Russia-Ukraine War, biothreats, nuclear weapons proliferation, the ongoing climate crisis, state-sponsored disinformation efforts, and disruptive technologies for 2023.
In January 2021, when it was the closest to midnight in its history, the Doomsday Clock’s hands shifted to 100 seconds to midnight and stayed there all year.
The globe is still caught in an extraordinarily hazardous time, the Bulletin declared in a statement at the previous event, and “the clock remains the closest it has ever been to civilization-ending Armageddon.”
Seven minutes until midnight was the timer’s initial setting. Since the conclusion of the Cold War in 1991, 17 minutes is the furthest it has ever been from midnight.
The Bulletin was established in 1945 by scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project, which resulted in the development of the first nuclear weapons, including Albert Einstein, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and others.
In 1947, it was decided that Doomsday Clock represented a universal susceptibility to disaster.
