UNITED STATES: A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy Darnell Calhoun was tragically shot on Friday near Lake Elsinore, only two weeks after another deputy officer was fatally shot while performing his duties, officials said.

Deputy Darnell Calhoun dies after being tragically shot

“Deputy Darnell Calhoun, 30, was slain while attending to a complaint involving domestic violence and a child custody dispute,” said Chad Bianco, Riverside County Sheriff, in a news conference on Friday night.

“He’s a husband. A son. He would have been a dad,” Bianco said, his voice quivering. He leaves behind a wife who is expecting. According to Bianco, sheriff’s dispatchers received a call reporting “unknown trouble” around 4:20 p.m. and overheard voices in the background.

Calhoun was the first to arrive at the residences in the Lakeland Village neighborhood’s unincorporated 18500 block of Hilldale Lane. Though it was unclear what occurred immediately after that, the second deputy to arrive on the scene discovered Calhoun wounded in the roadway.

That deputy and a male suspect got into a gunfight, and the officer shot the suspect, according to Bianco. Calhoun was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center, where his condition was initially described as critical, where he remained until the sheriff’s office announced his passing at around 8:00 p.m.

According to reports, he was shot in the torso and leg.

During a press conference, Sheriff Chad Bianco said, “Nobody could possibly have anything bad to say about him, and he was the most upbeat, optimistic, and morally upright guy you could ever want to meet. A father, a mother, a wife, and us are trying to figure out why.”

The suspect, who was also injured in the shooting, was transferred to the same hospital and is reportedly in critical condition. There was no further information on the suspect’s identity.

Outside the residence where the incident took place, there was a considerable law enforcement presence, including a Bearcat. Deputies stated that they were clearing the dwelling, and the ongoing incident had ended at around 6:15 p.m.

After hearing the news of Calhoun’s passing, dozens of RSO deputies, CHP officers, and his former colleagues from the San Diego Police Department congregated at the hospital.

This is the second deadly shooting involving an RSO deputy in less than three weeks, after Deputy Isaiah Cordero was shot and killed in Jurupa Valley on December 29.
