QATAR: Iran defeated Wales 2-0 in a game that was seen as a must-win for them to earn three points and move up to second place in Group B.
Iran embarks on the top of the game by defeating Wales
The first half ended with neither team scoring. The dramatic moment came late in the second half when Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was dismissed for stumbling into Mehdi Taremi after he crossed the line and collided with him.
Rouzbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezaein scored goals for Iran. On the other hand, Wales granted two goals in the final nine minutes of extra time while playing with ten men.
After England hammered Iran 6-2 in the group opener, Iran was last in the standings with the poorest goal differential. But now they have moved up to the second spot in Group B.
Iran has never advanced past the group stage and has only triumphed in one of its previous 11 World Cup games, a 1-0 victory over Morocco four years ago.
“We’re devastated. We fought right up until the end. It’s one of those things you have to accept despite how difficult it is. (After the game, in the team huddle) I simply said, Keep going. We have to get ourselves together,” Wales captain Gareth Bale said.
Before this, Gareth Bale started the match for Wales against Iran, marking his 110th appearance for the nation.
