INDONESIA: The 17th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit is scheduled to take place from 15-16 November 2022 in Bali, Indonesia.
With its luscious, sandy beaches, magnificent beauty, and vibrant culture, Bali will greet foreign leaders and dignitaries for the international conference and spark deliberations about the G20 process and intense work executed within the Ministerial Meetings, Working Groups, and Engagement Groups throughout the year.
G20 includes world’s most developed and largest economies
G20, or the Group of Twenty, is an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union (EU), advocating and addressing pertinent issues related to the global economy, financial stability, climate change mitigation, and sustainable growth.
The countries who partake in the group’s proceedings include Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Russia, South Africa, Turkiye, Argentina, Mexico, France, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Italy, UK, China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, European Union and, the United States.
It is evident from the line-up, the G20 is composed of the world’s most developed and largest economies, including both industrialized and developing nations. The G20 countries accounts for 80% of the gross world product (GWP), two-thirds of the global population and 60% of the world’s land area.
Other countries, international organisations, and non-governmental bodies are also allowed to send their delegates to the forum, some even on a permanent basis.
This year’s agenda will mainly focus on revamping the global health architecture to create a more equitable, accessible, and crisis-ready health infrastructure to combat future pandemics, much like COVID and Ebola.
Moreover, digital and IT revamping will also be a major priority as foreign delegates will discuss the optimum utilization of existing and developing digital resources to ensure everyone benefits from it. The group will also emphasize the role of women in IT and software infrastructure to prioritize and revitalize women’s skills in the workplace.
Third on the agenda is the promotion of an urgent and immediate transition to cleaner, greener energy resources in order to ensure a brighter, coal-free future for succeeding generations in the wake of drastic climate change and man-made catastrophes.
Leaders attending the global summit include newly-elected British prime minister Rishi Sunak, his Japanese and Indian counterparts Fumio Kishida and Narendra Modi, respectively, Chinese President Xi Jinping, US president Joe Biden, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Another newly elected leader, Italy’s prime minister Giorgio Meloni and Indonesia’s Joko Widodo will be attending. Additionally, the President of the European Union Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will be in attendance. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will attend virtually, while Russia will send its foreign minister Sergei Lavrov as a representative.
The main theme of the summit is “Recover Together, Recover Stronger,” heeding global calls for reinforcement and mobilization of global resources, both military and economic, to combat urgent crises, which include the Ukraine conflict, climate change, food shortage, and international inflation.
