INDIA: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti got a legal notice from the authorized administration to vacate her official residence, the Gupkar Road bungalow, by November 15. Meanwhile, she has been offered an alternative property in Srinagar.
As soon as Mufi received the eviction notice, she called the reporters and said, “It’s not a big deal to leave the house if there are no security concerns.”
However, It’s a major setback for the ex-leader as earlier she was entitled to rent-free furnished accommodation at the cost born by the government,
The present residence of Mehbooba is on Gupkar Road, over Srinagar’s Dal Lake. Previously, it was allotted to Mehbooba’s father, former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, in 2005. However, the Muftis stayed for a longer period of time after that.
The airview residence was an interrogation centre called PAPA-II and served as an official guest house till 1989. However, the Border Security Force occupied it in 1990.
It used to be the regular interrogation centre before the PDP came to power in an alliance with the Congress. The building served as the official residence of then finance minister and senior PDP leader Muzaffar Baig. Henceforth, the building is again under the control of the government.
The Deputy director of estates issued the notice to the ex-PDP supremo Mehbooba Mufti, “The response filed by you was examined by the department. The grounds raised by you do not justify your retaining the scheduled accommodation, particularly against the backdrop of the fact that the government has communicated in writing its willingness to provide you with an alternate accommodation on security or any other ground(s).”
The notice also mentioned the following sections, under Section 4 of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorized Occupants) Act, 1988, read with the amended Act, 2016.
