NIGERIA. Abuja. Nasarawa State: The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, psc (+), NPM, fdc, has ordered the installation of electoral offence desks across the 36 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, as the 2023 general election approaches.
The desk, which is under the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Force Headquarters, Abuja, with the Commissioner of Police, FCID as desk officer and Assistant Commissioners of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department is looking into all activities and investigating electoral thuggery and offences during the upcoming election.
A press release by the Force Public Relations Officer (PRO), Force Headquarters, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that, part of the responsibilities of the desk include, to collaborate and investigate every electoral offenses.
Since the establishment of the desk is propelled by the modified Electoral Act 2022, Baba tipped the desk officers of the several states to swing into action by kicking off their duties immediately.
The Police Force in Keffi Area Command, Nasarawa State, has arrested and apprehended 24 suspected political thugs in the state, in accordance with the desk’s establishment mandate.
The thugs are thought to be supporters of a senatorial candidate in the state’s recent primary election.
Items recovered
Eight pump action weapons, two locally produced revolver guns, 37 rounds of live ammunition, four bulletproof vests, 27 mobile phones, two pairs of vigilante costume, five cutlasses, ten varied knives, and criminal charms were among the items found from the arrested suspects.
IGP Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, has directed that the case be transferred immediately to the FCID’s Electoral Offenses Desk and that the concerned aspirant be arrested immediately for further investigation.
