RUSSIA/UKRAINE: Recent updates from the Russia-Ukraine war front confirm that heavy predawn shelling of a residential locality in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv left one person dead and 18 others grievously injured, according to regional Governor, Oley Synehubov.
Synehubov posted the update on the Telegram media app which read, “At the moment, there are 18 wounded, among them two children, one person died.”
Barely a day ago, six people perished and 16 others were wounded in a Russian rocket attack on the city.
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned the attack and called it “despicable and cynical”. He further confirmed other details of shelling, notifying that a block of flats had been ” totally destroyed” in Wednesday night’s attack, which he said, “had no justification and shows the powerlessness of the aggressor.”
Synehubov wrote on the app, “We will not forgive, we will take revenge.”
Kharkiv was a potential target for the Russian forces in the early days of the conflict, but its troops were unable to penetrate the city’s stronghold. While Russia has now turned its attention to Ukraine’s east and south, Kharkiv remains an easy target for the Russian air force.
UN Secretary-general Antonio Guterres will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Lviv on Thursday to deliberate on grain exports and concerns about the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, which has come under heavy shelling in recent weeks.
The triad is special as it marks Erdogan’s first face-to-face encounter with Zelensky ever since the Russian army declared its “special military operation” against Ukraine on February 24, although the Turkish leader has met Russian President Vladimir Putin twice in recent months.
The three world leaders will conduct a joint news conference after their meetings in Lviv, an important transit stop for Ukrainian refugees fleeing west to Europe since Russia’s February 24 invasion.
Meanwhile, Turkey’s Defence Ministry said on Thursday that a new grain shipment has left Ukraine’s Chornomorsk port, bringing the tally of the total number of vessels to leave Ukraine’s Black Sea ports under an UN-brokered grain deal to 25.
“The Belize-flagged I Maria was loaded with corn,” it said, adding that four other ships will arrive in Ukraine’s ports on Thursday to be loaded with grain.
