NIGERIA/CANADA: At the ongoing Under 20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica, team Nigeria fondly called ‘the Falconets’, trashed the Canadian team 3-1 in their last group game to qualify for the quarter-final stage of the competition where they will log it out with the Netherland side.
Earlier in the competition, Coach Chris Danjuma’s ladies defeated South Korea 1-0, France one goal to nothing to secure a maximum of nine points to qualify to the next round of the competition.
Danjuma described the last group game against Canada as a ‘different game’ where the Canadian ladies first score in the early minutes of the game. But two goals from a penalty spot from Esther Onyenezide and another goal in the second half by Chioma Olise gave the Falconets the grace to smile.
“My girls would seek to win even though they had already booked their place in the last eight. The game against Canada is very important, to sustain our winning mentality,” Danjuma said.
Danjuma added that it was a good game seeing the ladies bouncing back after conceding for the first time in the tournament, it showed character and spirit, and that was huge for the team.
The game ended 2-1 in the first half and a few minutes into the second half substitute Chioma Olise got Nigeria’s third goal.
The Falconets are to face the Netherland side next week Monday at Alajuela stadium for the quarter-final round of the competition.
Meanwhile, during the fifth round of the qualifying match, Falconets defeated the Senegalese side 4-1 and 4-1 in both the first and second leg of the qualifying game to book a place in the ongoing tournament in Costa Rica.
This year’s tournament Costa Rica makes it the 10th edition of the Fifa U20 Women’s World Cup.
