AUSTRALIA. Canberra: Canberra Airport in Australia was shut down after a shooter opened fire with five rounds of ammunition in the check-in area. The police have reportedly taken a suspect into custody.
One person was detained, according to Australian Federal Police, and a gun was found.
An examination of the CCTV revealed that just one person was thought to be responsible for the event.
The airport received a call at 1:30 pm (GMT+10) reporting gunfire in the main terminal building. However, there have been no recorded injuries. After that, the airport was put on lockdown.
At the Canberra airport, the bullets shattered glass and pierced walls.
A traveller said she had just put her bags into the security check when the incident occurred.
“We were in security and heard the first gunshots. I turned around and a man was standing with a pistol, like a small one, facing out towards the car drop-off,” she said.
“Someone yelled, get down, get down and we just ran out of there,” she said.
Police asked that people should refrain from going to the airport at this time, saying that the issue has been controlled and that the terminal was evacuated out of caution.
All flights are currently grounded, while some aircraft still have passengers inside them as they wait on the tarmac.
The Canberra airport’s police department stated that they were striving to restore service as quickly as possible and expressed optimism that it will happen by the afternoon.
