AFRICA. Sudan: Nearly 18 million Sudanese nationals which is about half the population of the country are to experience severe and extreme hunger by September this year.
This is due to poor harvest, and rising international food prices caused by the worsening hunger in the North-eastern African nation. The World Bank has said a statement.
Sudan, which is one of the world’s poorest countries, is languishing in an economic crisis due to the coup it experienced in 2021 led by Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
However, the World Bank, through the World Food Programme (WFP) has donated the sum of $100 million to the Sudanese government to help in tackling food insecurity for about two million Sudanese citizens.
The $100 million grants will help provide an emergency safety net due to the devastating effect of severe hunger caused by the Russian-Ukraine war where grain prices escalated in the African country.
“The funds will be channelled solely through the WFP to scale up the food security response and provide direct support to the most vulnerable people of Sudan. It will also provide cash transfers and food to more than two million people needing aid cuts across 11 of Sudan’s 18 states, ” the bank said.
According to the aiding agency, “Save the Children, two children from the most affected western region of North Darfur have died of hunger-related issues, which it said was an ominous sign of what is to come.”
