UNITED KINGDOM: According to the most recent reports, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has extended her commanding 28 lead over British-Indian ex-minister Rishi Sunak in the contest to become the UK’s next Prime Minister.
On Thursday, Conservative Party members voted to send Sunak and Truss to the final stage of the party’s leadership contest in the race to replace Boris Johnson.
The enthralling battle between the two seeks support from 150,000 members. Earlier, Trade minister Penny Mordaunt had given a tough competition to the race but got eliminated in the final vote.
Trying to gain support and trust from the citizens, Sunak conveyed a message, “We need to restore trust, rebuild the economy and reunite the country. I’m confident we can do that, and we’ve got a positive message to take out to our members.”
It was earlier reported that Sunak was ranked among the most dependable contenders, whereas many activists disliked Truss’s past betrayal of Johnson.
An unnamed cabinet member claimed that if Truss and Sunak became prime ministers during the cost-of-living crisis, they would both be vulnerable targets. The one dread candidate was Boris Johnson, who failed to sustain, but now, these two members are on recon radar.
The UK will elect its new prime minister on September 5, and the voting will conclude on September 2.
Many others who didn’t finish the race faced fierce opposition thanks to this thrilling struggle between the two strong leaders.
