RUSSIA/IRAN: President of Russia Vladimir Putin, here on Tuesday criticised the West for its dependence on green fuel and energy, claiming that the Russian gas corp Gazprom will continue to fulfil its commitments ‘in full’ and supply gas in adequate amounts.
As reported by the AFP, Putin spoke to reporters in Tehran after his trade talks with leaders of Iran and Turkey, that “Gazprom has fulfilled, is fulfilling and will fulfil its obligations in full.”
The European Commission has made ardent efforts to formulate a “gas demand reduction strategy” to survive the upcoming winter since Putin began limiting gas delivery on February 24 to prevent EU members from refilling stocks in reply to the West’s response of imposing sanctions on Moscow. Speaking in Tehran, Putin publicly embarrassed the West’s effort to cut back on fossil fuels and insist on green energy.
Putin said, “They are great experts in the field of non-traditional relations and in the field of energy, they have also decided to rely on non-traditional types of energy- the sun and wind. They themselves are shutting down everything and then looking for someone to blame- it would be funny if it were not so sad.”
Putin’s response is a clever strategic move to showcase that the Western nations know better than to invest in green energy over Russian gas. But Putin’s remarks also highlight that the world leader refuses to believe in long-term solutions for sustainable living in green energy.
As a harsh response to Russian sanctions on Ukraine over the ongoing military crisis, the EU had decided in May to halt the majority of Russian imports, especially gas, by the end of this year. However, the group decided against an outright ban on Russian gas.
