Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Rauf Sregbesola made this known through his spokesperson, Sola Fasure shortly after visiting Kirikiri Maximum and Medium Security Custodial Centres in Kirikiri, Lagos state.

Aregbesola made the disclosure barely a week after the attack on Kuje, Abuja custodian attack where about 800 inmates including members of Boko Haram escaped from the corrections centre.

61,000 Boko Haram members and other criminal groups are being held hostage in North-eastern prisons in Nthe country, Aregbesola added.

“The Boko Haram insurgency across Nigeria has caused over 100,000 deaths and led to the displacement of millions of people. Scores of criminal elements and insurgents across the country are on a path to defeat, they have been heavily degraded. Over 61,000 of them are in our custody in the North-East,” Aregbesola has said.

Premium Times reports how different correctional centres across Nigeria in recent years have suffered attacks and have led to the escape of about 5,000 inmates.

Before the Kuje correctional centre attack, Aregbesola was described as “the most fortified prison facility in Nigeria”.

However, during Aregbesola’s visit to the Kuje prison facility, he charged Nigerian security personnel to be dedicated and focused to end terrorism and other criminal gangs in the country.

You all must fight to defend Nigerians, the constitution and the country’s institutions. No criminal must be spared, Aregbesola charged security personnel.

Aregbesola, therefore, tipped the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCOs) to add more commitment to their work in times of intelligence gathering and information.
