NIGERIA. ABUJA: Nigeria being a major player in the oil and gas industry that constitutes upstream, midstream and downstream is expected to refine petroleum crude oil, processing, marketing and transportation of raw gas. Consumers are urged to implore the use of geospatial technologies to stop the activities of oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the county.
Speaking during the Nigerian Energy Mix for Sustainable Economic Growth at the Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition held at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja, Surveyor-General of the Federation (SGoF), Abudulganiyu Adeyemi Adebomehin said there is an urgent need for adoption of technology to reduce vandalism and theft as it has huge economic challenges on the country’s economy.
According to Adebomehin, the Nigeria oil sector is expected to provide financial stability and enhance the resources of the country. If the activities are judiciously tackled, it will go a long way to diversify the economy for a robust financial base and sustainable development.
To add voice to the commitment of the government to deal with the threat, Adebomehin offered the advice that the adoption and utilisation of geospatial technologies is a sure means of checking oil theft and vandalising of oil facilities. It also dealt with activities on the earth’s surface, positioning and movement of objects.
Adebomehin further advised that geospatial technologies, facilities and domains could be watched and drones deployed to build quick search through monitoring servers for response options.
The volumes of oil being transported should be determined first and the carriers could be monitored from point to point with geospatial technologies. He strongly advised the operators to collaborate with licensed surveyors for the protection of critical facilities, loading and unloading of oil and gas Adebomehin.
Transcontinental Times gathered that the Nigerian government has spent a total of N648.82 billion on pipeline maintenance in 5.5years. This is more than the capital allocation to the Health Sector N617.56 billion in 13 years.
