SPAIN: About 30 African migrants were allegedly killed by police operatives trying to thwart illegal migration between Spain and Morocco border.
Transcontinental Times learnt that the migrant died in a stampede — as described by Moroccan authority — while attempting to jump over a fence from Morocco to Melilla in Spain last Friday.
As per the reports, the incident has left scores of people injured.
According to the sources, the migrants who breached the border were about 133 in number. The breach came few weeks after the two countries signed a diplomatic pact.
However, there were casualties on both sides as the Spanish government claimed that 47 guards sustained minor injuries. It also claimed that four police vehicles were destroyed by the migrants who hurled stones at its officials.
According to the Moroccan Human Rights Association, 27 people were confirmed dead.
The United Nations Human Rights in a tweet condemned the incident, saying it was “deeply disturbed” by the deaths of at least 23 African migrants & injury of about 76 people as they tried to cross from Morocco into Spain on 24 June.
“We call on the 2 countries to ensure independent investigations & respect for migrants’ human rights,” the added.
However, the scenario snowballed into a protest on Monday morning. Many protestants believe that the killing and attack on the migrant was racist treatment against the Blacks.
Corruption in African countries forces its nationals to seek greener pastures in the diaspora, especially in European countries. However, the inhumane situation they find themselves in is another disturbing story.
