INDIA: The BJP lodged police complaints against controversial filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma after tweeting about NDA Presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu.
Even as Varma clarified his remarks, BJP leaders Gudur Narayana Reddy and T. Nandeshwar Goud filed a complaint against him at Abid’s police station in Hyderabad.
The BJP leaders claimed that Varma made disparaging remarks about Murmu, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the Presidential election next month.
RGV, as the filmmaker is commonly known, posted the controversial tweet on June 22. It says, “Who are the Pandavas if Draupadi is President? And, perhaps most importantly, who are the Kauravas?”
After seeking legal advice, the police said they would take the necessary action on the complaint.
Ram Gopal Varma’s remarks were also condemned by the BJP’s Andhra Pradesh unit chief, Somu Veerraju, who demanded harsh action against him. He stated that the police should take note of Ram Gopal Varma’s tweet and file a case against him on the spot.
The BJP leader also suggested that the filmmaker be imprisoned and examined by a psychiatrist.
Meanwhile, Ram Gopal Varma clarified his remarks on Friday. “This was said solely for irony and was not intended in any other way… Draupadi is my favourite character in the Mahabharata, but because the name is so uncommon, I only remembered the associated characters and thus my expression. It was never intended to hurt anyone’s feelings.” He tweeted about it.
In another tweet, Ram Gopal Varma chastised politicians for bringing each other down. “When all politicians are so busy backstabbing and tearing each other down,” he wrote, “one wonders when they will have time and energy to look into people’s problems, which is their primary job.”
