INDIA: Krishnakumar Kunnath, or KK, by whatever name we knew him as fans or personnel, one thing we all had in common was our undying love for our lost music legend. In whichever film industry he worked in, his diverse vocals orchestrated one of the most delicate art pieces. May 31, 2022, came as a black day for every music lover and for those who not only respected but related to such a versatile singer. India has lost another music legend from the pantheon of the country’s most excellent musicians.
Sach Keh Raha Hai Deewana Dil, Dil Na Kisi Se Lagana (My crazy heart is saying the truth, don’t fall in love with someone), these are the lyrics from the film’s famous song cover, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, which was sung by none other than KK. These aren’t just lines; they’re manifestations of sentiments. Specifically, we’d like to express our feelings for KK. We’ve become so enamored with the voice of the music legend that we’ve fallen in love with it, but now that he’s gone, we’ll never hear it again. Every music lover’s loss is immense, as he has left us with only his magnificent tunes.
Everything that synced with KK’s voice created a great recollection
The arrival of a symphony, like that of a musician, brings music into this world. In the same way, KK was born in New Delhi on August 31, 1968. However, many outstanding musicians were in the music industry before KK’s arrival. But, with his arrival, the music industry was destined to undergo a significant transformation. After completing his academics in Delhi, KK’s life became extremely simple, and he moved at a very sluggish pace, as there were slow notes that were not heard. Still, their presence discloses an effect that makes the song more memorable.
Due to his profession as a salesman on a five thousand rupees monthly paycheck, his life was more monotonous than melodic at the time. He married Jyothy, his childhood sweetheart, in 1991. It is said that behind every successful person, there is a woman; in the same way, Jyothy arrived in KK’s life, where one cannot say he gained immediate success, but his life was tuning up with the track.
The mayhem of the city and the commotion of the salesman’s life drove KK into singing. Since he was a child, he has loved singing, and his favorite song was Mehbooba from Sholay. This was a song he liked to sing to his friends and family. After quitting his work, KK began his career as an advertising jingle artist alongside his singer friend Shivani Kashyap.
Most 90’s kids are familiar with the classic ad song Desh Ki Dhadkan; yes, you guessed it right. KK also sang the jingle. It was his one magnum opus that helped to popularise his music career. We can’t imagine the lasting impact he had on the generation of the 1990s. Whether it’s Shaka Laka Boom Boom’s catchy opening song or Hip Hip Hurray’s gripping theme song, they’ve become part of our clumsy singing skills that we used to show off to our classmates. He sang about 3,500 jingles in 11 languages over the years.
The Music legend’s Bollywood debut
The film Maachis provided KK with his first break in Bollywood music. He only sang two lines from the song Chod Gaye Who Galiya. Though he was still a long way from the spotlight, his fate hung in the balance awaiting the one primary song that could unlock his full potential. Finally, KK’s official Bollywood debut song Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil Se from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) gave India a glimpse of the budding music icon. He felt this song to be a watershed moment in his life.
The youths were enthralled with KK’s solo album, Pal, released under the Sony Music label. Many people recall songs like Pyar Ke Pal, Apki Dua, and Yari off the top of their heads from the album. At the time, Yari’s song became a friendship anthem. Later, he created a streak of hits after hits with songs like Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai, Ankho Mein Teri, Zindagi Do Pal Ki, Tu Jo Mila, and many others. Despite any formal music training that defined the immense ocean of talent residing within him, he accomplished all of this.
Like a melodic rhythm with ups and downs on vocals to generate a harmonic effect in the music, KK’s life was identical to a musical tune. His presence created a symphony of idealism and achievement with a simplicity that concluded on a high note. He left a big impression on his work that will live on in our hearts, not as a memory but as a living persona. Since an artist never dies, his artistry keeps him alive in the hearts of millions worldwide even after his demise.
