KOLKATA: Bollywood singer Krishnakumar Kunnath popularly known as KK died last night just hours after performing at a concert in Kolkata. His official Instagram feed features photos from a concert he performed 10 hours ago in a Kolkata theatre.
After the event in Kolkata’s Nazrul Mancha auditorium, the 53-year-old singer fell at the hotel where he was staying. The singer was declared deceased by doctors at CMRI hospital.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said, “West Bengal Government to give gun salute to singer #KK at Kolkata airport.”
Krishnakumar Kunnath, better known by his stage name KK, was well known for songs like ‘Pal’ and ‘Yaaron,’ which became significant favourites among teenagers in the late 1990s and were frequently heard at school and college farewells and teen cultural events.
“There is a certain energy an artiste gets when he or she is on stage. No matter what one’s condition is, once I am on stage, I forget everything and simply perform,” KK had said in his memoir on his official website, The Mesmerizer.
Pal, his debut album, was widely acclaimed in 1999. He began his career in playback singing in the early 2000s, recording a wide range of popular songs for Bollywood films.
KK has recorded songs in a variety of languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, and Bengali.
Condolences were sent out over Twitter by politicians, actors, and fans. He was popularly known as the ‘voice of Emraan Hashmi’ as they both gave many hit songs together.

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar also offered his condolences in a tweet.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee called his demise “untimely”.
In his discography and memoir, The Mesmerizer, KK is described as a “versatile singer [who] has produced numerous unforgettable and eternal tunes.”
The bouncy “Khuda Jaane,” romantic pieces like “Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai” and “Awarapan Banjarapan,” and the melancholy “Tadap Tadap Ke,” one of his early hits from the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, to name a few.
