INDIA. Mumbai: On Friday, a vehicle going from a transit camp in Partapur near Siachen to a forward location in sub-sector Hanif plunged down a 50 to 60 feet deep ravine (Shyok river) in the Turtuk sector of Ladakh (Union Territory in Kashmir area), killing seven army men and injuring 19.
At around 9 a.m., the vehicle went off the road and into the river, causing the disaster. The vehicle, registered JK 10 6245 and driven by Ahmed Shah, a Changmar native, was transporting army troops from Nubra to Turtuk when it crashed in Largyab, Pachhathang, after the driver lost control, according to government sources.
In an emergency operation, all of the injured were rescued from the gorge and sent to base camp, where seven soldiers were declared dead.
Others were treated at Pratapur’s 403 Field Hospital before being flown to the Army’s Western Command Hospital in Panchkula, Haryana.
Col Emron Musavi, an Army spokesman headquartered in Srinagar, said 19 soldiers were taken to the Western Command Hospital with non-fatal injuries.
An FIR (No 10/2022) under sections 279, 337, and 304 A has been registered at the Nubra police station. The seven soldiers who lost their lives in the accident are: Subedar Shinde Vijay Rao Sarjerao ( Khatav, Satara, Maharashtra), Naib Subedar Gurudyal Sahu, Lance Havildar MD Saijal T, Naik Sandeep Pal, Naik Jadhav Prashant Shivaji (Kolhapur, Maharashtra), and Naik Ramanuj Kumar and Lance Naik Bappaditya Khutia.
President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi expressed their grief on the accident and hoped for the speedy recovery of the injured.
“Saddened to know that an unfortunate road accident in Ladakh has claimed the lives of some of our brave soldiers. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” the Rashtrapati Bhavan wrote on its official Twitter handle.
The PM said All possible assistance is being provided to the affected soldiers. “Anguished by the bus accident in Ladakh in which we have lost our brave army personnel. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope that the injured recover at the earliest. All possible assistance is being given to the affected,” Modi wrote on Twitter.
Rahul Gandhi wrote, “Extremely saddened to hear of the tragic accident with Indian Army personnel in Ladakh. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families, and wishes for the speedy recovery of our injured soldiers.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his condolences and wished for a speedy recovery of the injured in a tweet in Hindi. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, JK Lt Gov. Manoj Sinha, and others offered condolences to bereaved families.
