Lassa Fever: 112 Kills and 630 Cases Recorded in 2022

Nigeria: One hundred twelve persons have been confirmed killed as Nigeria records 630 cases of Lassa Fever in 2022; Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) announced this during its week ten report, which covers March 7 to March 13. 

NCDC noted in the week ten report that Nigeria has recorded an entire case of 3,079 suspected cases of Lassa fever, of which 630 were positive since the beginning of this year.

Twenty-three states and 87 local government areas across the federation were confirmed with at least a single case each, NCDC has said.

Affected states

The affected states are Kebbi, Bauchi, Taraba, Nasarawa, Gombe, Kogi, Ebonyi, Ondo, and Edo.

NCDC further stated that 45 healthcare workers were affected by the virus between January and March.

Case fatality rate

However, the week one to week ten report has it that the country has recorded a case fatality rate (CFR) of 17.8 percent, which shows that it has drastically reduced from the 2021 CFR of 22.0 percent, NCDC has said.

It also stated that the Ondo state accounts for 70 percent of all new cases, the Edo state has 24 percent, and the Bauchi state has 16 percent, respectively. 

The NCDC also noted that the age bracket of those affected is between 21 to 30 years. It also shows that the number of confirmed cases has reduced from 57 to 33 in the preceding week.
