INDIA: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi has got its first-ever female vice-chancellor. Prof. Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit of Savitribai Phule Pune University, Maharashtra has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of JNU for a tenure of five years. As per the reports President Ram Nath Kovind, who is visitor to the University, has approved the appointment of Pandit for a period of five years.
Santishree Pandit is an alumna of JNU where she pursued her MPhil and Ph.D. in International Relations. She is currently a professor at Pune University, Maharashtra. Pandit will be the 13th Vice-Chancellor of JNU after M Jagadesh Kumar. M Jagadesh Kumar has Completed his five-year term ended last year, was last week appointed as the chairman of the UGC.
Santishree, 59, was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. His mother was then a professor of Tamil and Telugu at the Leningrad Oriental Faculty. Santishree began her teaching career at Goa University in 1988 and moved to Pune University in 1993. She has held administrative positions in various academic bodies.
She has also been a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), and the Visitor’s nominee to central universities.
Meanwhile, Former vice-chancellor Kumar and a few groups of students have been at loggerheads over several issues in the university. Establishing good relationships with all students in such situations will be the priority of Santishree Pandit.
