NIGERIA: The need for expansion and investing in Nigeria’s national museum (Abuja and Benin), has been stressed as this will be capable of creating additional jobs, promoting tourism and sustaining cultural heritage.
The Director-General, National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), professor Abba Tijani made the announcement in Ibadan.
Tijani, however, called on the federal government as a matter of urgency to take possession of the museum as it will assist in boosting the economic activities of the country.
He also said that the commission has done its best in creating partnerships with corporate organizations to help in sustaining the agency’s adequate funding.
The commission on its own has reconstructed and renovated many government-owned museums across the country just to make sure the agency is sustained and continues operating, Tijani said.
However, Tijani also added that the commission is set to receive not less than 1,030 artefacts that were taken from Nigeria in 1897 during Germany’s visit, this will serve as part of the commission’s arrangement in rebuilding Nigeria’s museum.
Many artefacts have already been received from Germany but the commission is yet to receive at least an additional 1,030 in 2022, Tijani said.
If the artefacts are managed, it will help the agency in having more museum centres which will attract additional tourism activities worldwide. And it will be an avenue of seeing better chances to enhance Nigeria’s culture, Tijani noted.
Artefacts will also help in attracting more investors.
“It will make the foreigners understand the significance of the artefacts better and give them an added advantage which they might not get when they visit museums in Europe,” Tijani said.
