AUSTRALIA: Melbourne Renegades defeats Adelaide Strikers by 2 runs to win their first match of Big Bash League 2021-22. Kane Richardson was captaining the Melbourne Renegades team while Peter Siddle was captaining the Adelaide Strikers team. In this match after winning the toss, Melbourne Renegades decided to bat first.
Melbourne Renegades got off to a great start
Sam Harper and Mackenzie Harvey were opening the batting for the Melbourne Renegades side. Both the batsmen gave Renegades a good start. They both stitched up a 65 runs partnership for the opening wicket.
Sam Harper scored 33 runs off 28 deliveries which included 2 fours and 1 six. After he got out Melbourne Renegades were 65/1 after 8.5 overs.
After the fall of Harper, Jake Fraser joined Harvey in the middle but he couldn’t contribute much as he got out after scoring 8 runs off 11 deliveries.
Mackenzie Harvey scored his maiden Big Bash half-century. He scored 56 runs off 46 deliveries which included 2 fours and 2 sixes. After Harvey got out James Seymour played a handy knock as he scored 23 runs off 14 deliveries which included 1 four and 2 sixes. After James got out Melbourne Renegades were 142/4 after 17.4 overs.
After the wicket of James Seymour, Melbourne Renegades lost wickets at quick successions as they lost 5 wickets for just 9 runs, and as a result, Renegades scored 153/9 in their 20 overs.
For Adelaide Strikers, Peter Siddle took 3 wickets, George Garton and Daniel Worrall took 2 wickets each whereas Rashid Khan and Matthew Short took 1 wicket each.
Matthew Short and Jake Weatherald opened the innings for the Adelaide Strikers. They both gave Adelaide Strikers the start that they were expecting. The duo added 45 runs in 5 overs.
Matthew Short was the aggressor in this partnership but he got out off a delivery bowled by the Afghanistan left-arm Chinaman bowler Zahir Khan. Matthew Short scored 29 runs off 18 deliveries which included 1 four and 2 sixes and Adelaide Strikers were 45/1 after 5 overs.
Harry Nielsen joined Jake Weatherald after the fall of the first wicket. Just when Weatherald was getting settled, he got out. Weatherald scored 18 runs off 17 deliveries which included 2 fours.
Soon after the fall of Weatherald, Harry Nielsen also got out after scoring 30 runs off 30 deliveries. After that Jonathan Wells (8) got out cheaply while Ryan Gibson pulled his hamstring and he got retired hurt.
Daniel Drew was playing from one end but the wickets kept falling from the other end. There was some late resistance from Rashid Khan (11) and Daniel Worrall (9).
Daniel Drew failed to take Adelaide Strikers home
Adelaide Strikers needed 9 runs from the last over. Wes Agar got out on the second delivery off the final over and Strikers now needed 9 off 4 deliveries. Daniel Drew tried to win the game for the Strikers but some brilliant death bowling by James Pattinson helped Melbourne Renegades win this last-ball thriller by 2 runs.
For Renegades, Zahir Khan took 3 wickets, Will Sutherland took 2 wickets while Kane Richardson, James Pattinson, and Reece Topley took 1 wicket each.
