NIGERIA. Abuja: About 998 members of the dreaded Boko Haram with their families have surrendered to the Nigerian troops in the Borno state.
This includes 203 adult males, 302 adult females and 491 children.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) acting spokesperson Bernard Onyeuko, stated this in Abuja during a media briefing.
Nigerian troops have killed about 90 terrorists in the north-eastern part of Nigeria in the past two weeks.
Onyeuko added that many insurgents were reportedly killed during an airstrike earlier in November at the Baga axis of Lake Chad.
Again in November, Nigerian troops launched an attack at Askira-Uba in Borno, leading to the death of more than 50 insurgents and the destruction of many of their equipment and their hideout, Onyeuko said.
No fewer than 90 terrorists were neutralised and 21 of them were arrested by troops of Operation Hadin Kai in the northeast. Also, 98 assorted weapons, including AK-47 rifles and 2,589 rounds of ammunition were recovered.
However, about seven unarmed civilians were also saved from the hand of the kidnappers.
Onyeuko also added that, in the north-western and north-central parts of the country, about 128 bandits were killed within the same period.
However, in total, 12 insurgents were arrested, 118 bandits neutralized, five kidnapped civilians rescued, 26 different weapons and 194 munitions were also recovered.
As for Operation Safe Haven, “38 victims of armed bandits’ attacks and kidnap incidents were rescued and 45 criminals arrested, while 3 were neutral”.
Meanwhile, under operation While Stroke in the north-central, a total of seven armed bandits were arrested and five kidnapped civilians were as well rescued and seven armed bandits killed during the operations, Onyeuko noted.
The arrested and surrendered terrorists have since been profiled and handed over to appropriate authorities for further action, Onyeuko said.
