Apple iPhone Digital Key Will Soon Be Able To Unlock Your BMW

To start the car engine the iPhone has to be placed in the smartphone tray inside the car before you push the Start or the Stop button.

BMW becomes the first automaker to let customers use their iPhone as their digital car key. It will also allow wireless CarPlay. Owners can store the digital car keys in their Apple Wallet.

With the Digital key, car owners will only have to tap on their iPhone to unlock the vehicle. To start the car engine the iPhone has to be placed in the smartphone tray inside the car before you push the Start or the Stop button.

Car owners will have to set up the digital key using the BMW Smartphone App. Car owners can share access to the digital key with up to 5 family members via iMessage using configurable car access like maximum speed, radio volume, power for young drivers.

Even as your iPhone runs out of battery you need not worry for up to 5 hours as the app uses power reserve allowing the digital key to function.

The digital car key would be compatible with iPhone XR, XS, or newer versions and Apple Watch Series 5 or newer. The Digital car key debuts in 45 major countries and would be compatible with BMW series 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, X5, X6, X7, X5M, X6M, Z4 if manufactured after July 1, 2020.
