INDIA: The tallest statue in the country is made for B. R. Ambedkar, marking his 132nd birth anniversary. This is the first and biggest statue of the ‘man who framed the Indian Constitution’, with an overall height of 175 feet, including a 50-ft-high circular base resembling the edifice of the Parliament of India. As per reports, Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar is invited as the sole chief guest at the event in Hyderabad. The statue will be unveiled by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao as the foundation stone is laid by him.
Reportedly, this will be India’s first tallest statue of Ambedkar, which has been placed next to the State Secretariat, opposite the Buddha statue. It is located beside the Telangana Martyrs Memorial. The official statement of the chief minister’s office said that the statue weighed 474 tonnes and that 360 tonnes of stainless steel were installed for building the armature structure of the statue. Besides this, 114 tonnes of bronze were used to increase the longevity of the casting.
As per the official statement, “The pedestal on which the statue is installed has three floors with a total built-up area of 26,258 sq ft. This structure will house a museum that has several articles and pictures depicting the life history of Ambedkar and a 100-seat auditorium for presenting audio-visuals of Ambedkar’s life. A library will also be built in due course.”
The overall cost of the project was estimated at Rs. 146.50 crore, and the construction was taken up by KPC Projects Limited as per the agreement concluded on June 3, 2021.
As per reports, the statue was designed by well-known sculptors, Ram Vanji Sutar and his son Anil Ram Sutar of Ram Sutar Art Creations in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. He is a professional architect who designed several monumental sculptures, including the world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity (597 feet) of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat.
